Portrait Planning & Clothing Decisions

Pre-Portrait Consultations

Planning your portrait in advance is the secret to great results! A design appointment is of utmost importance in creating a unique image. We want to insure that your finished portrait is a true reflection of the subject's personality and character, and by spending a little time together before the actual photography, Steve is now best prepared to create an image which speaks volumes about the person. Along with the usual discussion of clothing, make-up and style, we will discuss the personality traits and the family dynamics of those being photographed.

The following guidelines and suggestions will help you in planning your portrait session, whether you choose an individual study, or a family/relationship portrait.

Choose timeless clothing which is simple and classic - and never goes out of style! Groups should strive to keep in similar tones and fashion, so that everyone looks like they "belong together". Avoid bright tones, striped or busy clothing, as it takes away from the center of interest in the portrait - the faces of people being photographed should always command the viewer's attention.

Glasses should not be worn during a portrait, due to glare and distortion issues. If you always wear glasses, it is suggested that the lenses be removed for the portrait session.

Make-up should be applied as you normally would, but in more of an "evening" style; that is, a little heavier than normal, well blended. Keep jewelry simple and refined.

For a black and white relationship portrait, bring simple, long sleeved, black or navy turtlenecks or shirts as well as black pants or a skirt.

Don't try a new hairstyle on the day of your photography session! Stick with a look you know works well. Men and children should wait about a week after a haircut before being photographed. Women know when their hair looks good!

Pick a style or mood and focus on it. Too many clothing changes and background changes leave little time to focus on what truly matters - great portraits.
